I visited the WWI battlefield of Verdun in college when I studied in Europe on a fieldtrip. The rows and rows of white cross gravemakers was shocking to think that each represented a person. The majority of the battlefield was still contaminated with live ammunition and could not be visited. It was sombering to think that many that die there were the same age I was at that time.
