Panama Dollarization Flag
2002
Serigraph collaged with sheet of uncut dollar bills
12 1/4 x 16 x 1 1/8 inches
Limited number of pieces still available

The Dollarization series is a group of collaged prints soon to be released. They are similar to The Dollar Spangled Banner in how they are created in that the flag is printed with transparent inks on plexi-glass and collaged with an actual sheet of uncirculated dollar bills. Panama is not inherently a dollarized nation. It differs from the other dollarized countries in that it uses a bi-monetary system since the county's inception. This in part is due to the influence that the United States played in assisting Panama in becoming an independent country from Columbia. Panama uses the United States Dollar and coins as its' official currency, but also has the Balboa which is its' own minted coin. So in essence, Panama never gave up its' own currency to use the dollar since the country has used the dollar officially since its' inception in November of 1903. In fact, its' constitution specifically forbids the country from producing its' own official paper currency. I have included Panama in this series because I think few people realize that it is a foreign country that uses the dollar as its' official currency.
